Two Seconds

Just posted a comment. From my machine to Blogger's servers in Google's farm in Cali or maybe Oregon. From there to T-Mobile's, who knows where. Server to fiber to antenna, over the air to my BlackBerry vibrating deep in the bag across the room. It took two seconds flat for the news to travel, around the world and back again, literally. I love being reminded it's almost 2007.

I had been negligent in my snuffing duties, and ran over to a growing flame. Without due caution, I huffed and puffed and blew that house in, destroying weeks worth of work in one thoughtless breath. Ah well, looks like a beach post-tsunami or a mountain sheared by mining, now.

These Things Make the Mind-meld

Got a pair of these from my parents, and can't say enough. They sound perfect. They're mind-altering. Music I know filter-to-fade sounds brand new. And the world disappears. Really, they're gone. Rode on four different lines today, never heard a squeal or door's clack-hiss. Not an asshole. Not a pack of Pepsi-chugging pre-teens. These things make the mind-meld between iPod and brain so-often-discussed, a reality. A fact. It might as well be in my head. An implanted defensive weapon soundtrack.

A Little for Later

You know you swallow a little spit to calm your throat after a long draw. And sometimes a little smoke hitches a ride, staking camp in your stomach. Then later, sometimes a while later, you burp, maybe only a little. But the smoke comes out, maybe only a little (certainly you can see it, your eyes are right there). Right there on the bench on the L, with people's holiday rush-hour crotches inches away. Did they see it, your little one-hitter puff?

On the Mark

I've told a lot of people, but I'm not sure I've told you--I think Apple's been pulling a scam since the dawn of the Dashboard. They tricked you into using widgets or they tricked you into building widgets--but either way, the widget economy boomed. 'Cause how do you get people to develop applications for a smartphone you can't announce until the last minute? You tell them they're developing for one thing, when in fact it's another. I've always thought that Dashboard widgets were meant to run on an Apple mobile device, one-at-a-time-ish. Shit, they already have the yellowpages on there. Now obviously, you'd need to corral the size and complexity of the widgets allowed to run on said device--that's what official dev tools are for.

Oh look, Dashcode. This is how platforms are born.

Apparently 9A321, the latest Leopard build, contains Core Animation sample code, "including a sample implementation of how to recreate the Cover Flow view from iTunes".

It's wonderful to see them handing back the keys.

Unseated

The temptation is to sit Indian-style, as it allows less flesh to come into contact with the backside of my searing silver laptop--but alas, my left knee consistently unseats the MagSafe connector leaving me dim-screened and running down batts. Design flaws, both.
