A New York Reality

Reality

Blogger heather thought:

i think part of the reason your readers comment so infrequently is that so many of your posts, to borrow some first-year crit language, present as fully resolved. there doesnt seem to be anything i can add to this image or its text that wouldnt diminish what it already does much better on its own.

its intriguing that your very public photos could pose so many questions to their viewers and yet do so in a way that precludes public answering, even in a medium (the blog) that overvalues chatter. im always telling my students that human beings are both culturally and cognitively prone to *need* to answer questions posed to them (hopefully thereby encouraging them to frame their work around genuine inquiries instead of declarative proofs). but theres something about your work here that seems like it defies that.

somehow a lot of these photos make me feel as though they dont really need me even as they speak, quite literally, directly to me.

There's deep cognition involved in the best forms of art. Neurons fire when see this image (and others) and we "get it" but the connections to our speech neurons aren't advanced enough to enunciate what it is that "we get."

I Dream

Blogger TRUE thought:

yo yo yo

try not smoking for a few days and you'll dream in super 8.

(but i don't advise going for more than a few days without smoking...i for one prefer to wake up and dream)

Vanishing

Vanishing

Thought this was nice. An original 1938 lithograph by Charles Loupot that takes every advantage of the medium, it's washy and deep. Sadly, fighting for hallway wallshare with foiled press sheets from Chanel lipsticks and Britney Spears' Curious.

My Kaffiyeh

 NYTKeffiyeh

“I’m not too up to speed in what’s going on in the Middle East,” said Liz Chernett, a strategic consultant in branding and a youth trends expert who bought a kaffiyeh from a vendor on St. Mark’s Place three months ago. “It’s an aesthetic thing.”

For not the second or third time in my life, I was way ahead of the Times' Sunday Style section. In this case, they finally caught on the wind this whole keffiyeh mess (they spell it kaffiyeh), something I've been bitching about for years. They sum it fine, throwing one nice diss at the violently fashionable--they're just rehashing the conflicts of '88.

Can't Lose What Never Was

When people speak of our dissolution of reality, they often speak of loss.

I agree--we've lost the sleep in our eyes.

Another fire the other night. This time necessitating four trucks and three hours. I fear the day that this timber frame falls, it will.

Eat Like You Mean It

Gliding by downtown Roanoke, past their star, on the right-hand side, I saw an Outback Steakhouse billboard that read "Eat like you mean it." Eat like you mean it. We're falling apart.
